I think the monarchs one was way too obscure. Georgia from King George, and Louisiana after King Louis of France is easy enough, but Virginia from Elizabeth I a.k.a. The Virgin Queen? Nah, mate. Too much of a stretch. Same with Carolina, which takes it's name from the Latin derivation of Charles, Carolus.

Other than that, a fun grid with lots of clever misdirection.
