Saw 3 solutions but just couldn't get the groupings in time. 4/10

So. Following on from. The discussion on #16157... what makes you give a grid 1/2/3/4/5 stars?

I know that grids below 3 stars drop off the front page for most people, so I rarely rate below 4 unless I see something actually broken. I try not to rate low just because it's hard. I'll give a 4 if a couple of the groups seem like bigger stretches. If it's too easy or too hard, that's still a 5 but a 5 that gets an "easy" or "fiendish" on the other scale.

Much like JonBob, a 3 from me means there were errors which affected it. Originally I gave everyone a 5 for quality if there were no errors. Now, in lieu of there being a way to signify the enjoyment factor, I give 4s unless I found it an outstanding grid. No point having a five point scale if you don't use its full range, I think.

I drop to 3 if there's something 'wrong' in the grid. Four is my standard (grid works, spelling & capitalisation are correct) whether I solve it or not. Five is for particularly clever, enjoyable or original grids. I have given lower than 3 for grids that have deliberately made no sense or have been verging on offensive.

This one got a 5 from me for clever, tricky crossovers. Don't know if it's just me, but the 'audience' seems to be getting more critical, which is a shame. I've noticed quite a few of the regular grid-setters dropping by the wayside. Maybe a coincidence.

There has been a lot of unconstructive negativity on here: I would hope well intentioned criticism's not putting people off, but yeah, maybe it has. It does.seem harder to.get lots of stars than it was but inevitably it gets harder to produce something original.and standout.

Sounds like I'm comparatively harsh! For me, most grids are 3 or 4*: if there are>1 valid solutions then 1* automatically. 4* needs something more than just a clear solid answer: more than 3 crossovers between the groups, an ingenious grouping or concept or some form of false connectivity. I'll prefer interesting flawed grids to vanilla or wilfully obscure ones, because there are so many of the former already and the latter,for me, rather miss the point.
