Thanks, Galdone. I did consider that, but felt that mic and mike are alternative abbreviations (I am involved with live music and so see both written quite frequently). However, I've just done a quick search and the top link - which I'm not allowed to supply, but it's on the Mental Floss site - states that "mic" is becoming more popular, for the noun at least ("micing up" an amp looks too weird!). So, as the drop is a relatively recent concept, I think you're probably right that it should generally be used with "mic".
