They are oxymorons. Think! It's still legal you know. Who's heard of barn red? Not you, it's not my fault your knowledge is limited.

They're not oxymorons! An oxymoron is a figure of speech that pairs two opposing words, they are single words.

Clearly this person does not know the meaning of the word oxymoron - none of the words at clue 2 are oxymorons. An oxymoron is a word that comprises two opposites such as bitter-sweet or love-hate. I think the setter may be half an oxymoron........

Nice ideas...but definitely not oxymorons! The words in that line are what grammar bores like me know as ‘closed compounds’.

An oxymoron is a figure of speech, usually one or two words, in which seemingly contradictory terms appear side by side.

@eric - When we think of oxymorons, we often think of two-word phrases with seemingly opposite components, like "alone together" or "sweet sorrow." But in some instances, a single word is all it takes.

Let’s get this one out of the way. When we learn about oxymorons, bittersweet is often one of the first words given as an example. The word combines two of the five taste sensations, the others being salty, sour, and savory (umami).

Whether bitter is really the opposite of sweet on the taste spectrum is arguable, but they are often contrasted since bitter is associated with medicines or some vegetables (like radishes) while sweet is associated with, well, sweets (candy and desserts).

@eric - We don't need to ask ourselves is it bitter or is sweet? Is it a basket or is it a ball? Is it a cow or is it a boy? Is it audio or is it visual? Is it a barn or is it a yard? The combination of the two contradictory meanings collaborate to form a separate meaning.
An oxymoron is a consecutive set of words that have contradictory meanings. In many cases they are obvious. However, as there are so many, you might not catch them all.

Haha yeah dude they are 100% definitely not oxymorons! The other slight criticism is I have only ever heard of it referred to as the Mongol empire, rather than Mongolian but that's just nitpicking. The oxymoron group is just 100% incorrect.
